Press the small buttons on the green tabs then push the green tabs down and rotate the shoulder sides inwards. In this review, I’m taking a look at one of the most innovative child safety products of the last few years: the mifold folding booster seat. Thanks to our partners at Carfoldio, I have the opportunity to get hands-on and in-depth with their upgraded version, the new mifold comfort. In this review, we specifically tried the mifold comfort. Thanks to a neighbor I had the opportunity to compare it to the original. While the bones of the two seats are basically the same, the new one is definitely an improvement!

Our advice would be to look out for a modular system – one that uses a base which is also compatible with a rear-facing baby car seat and then a rear-facing toddler seat. Fitting advice for carrycot car seats Some carrycot car seats are suitable only for babies up to 10kg, which means parents might change to a forward-facing next-stage seat too early. The BubbleBum is the travel product our family has used most, hands down (see my complete BubbleBum review). We’ve had one since my daughter reached booster age and height. She used until her 10th birthday on all of our travels (when she finally hit 4’9” and could now go without!). My son has used the newer design of this very same product regularly when we rent cars or take Uber/Lyft at our air travel destinations. In a nutshell, with hifold, it’s the seat belt that goes across the child, but with the Urban Kanga, the car seat harness goes across the child. At TaxiBaby, we recommend that parents keep children riding in a harnessed car seat until at least four years of age. If this isn’t possible for your situation, then have a look at hifold or the RideSafer vest. Choosing between different child restraints can be daunting, but fret not, we're always here to help you. Whats good?

You say you're not clear about the advantages of a Peg-Perego over a traditional booster. I was thinking weight (at 6.7 kg it's not a feather but ordinary boosters can be heavier) and bulk, because it folds kind of flat and is easier to carry around. We have taken a few flights with an ordinary car seat in a huge shoulder bag - not fun, with the car seat that you can't place on top of the suitcase trolley, and which keeps swinging from your shoulder. It feels like we’re living in the golden age of innovative baby and kid gear. Brands are realizing that parents are willing to pony up for game-changing products that make life easier, and parents with ideas and know-how are getting involved in design as well. Jon Sumroy, the Inventor and CEO of these car seats says: "We believe in a future where there is a child restraint for every child in every car, on every journey, every time". A sentiment we completely believe in! As you can see below, the Graco RightGuide offers a much bigger seating area. Kids who are big enough to get a good seat belt fit with both will need to decide whether they want to carry around the extra size of the RightGuide or be content with the smaller seating area of the mifold comfort. Either way, parents can rejoice that these kiddos are old enough to carry their own booster seats!

Well, there’s obviously a huge difference in size. They just don’t even compare. The mifold is the smallest booster seat on the market. When it comes to travel products, we always look for the most practical and useful items that would suit our travel needs. I have always found finding the right car booster seats the most difficult. During our 9-month world trip, we struggled a lot with car seats and often had to pay quite a lot of money to rent out the car seats. As we were travelling to many different countries it was not really practical to buy the car seats as they tend to be quite bulky and heavy. We tend to travel light so we need something easy to carry and a car seat that we trust will keep our kids safe.

Whats not so good?

Second, find the red tabs on the bottom to adjust the width of the lap belt guides. They’re easy to adjust once you know what to look for. There are three different widths to choose from, market on the guides as I, II and III. Choose the same width on each side, and be sure it’s the option that’s closest to your child without touching. For reference, my almost 7 year old (around 45 pounds) used setting I and my 9.5 year old (around 65 pounds) used setting II. A decade ago when parents of school-age children went on vacation, they generally left the booster seats at home. Some of them knew it wasn’t safe and preferred convenience, while others didn’t even realize the danger of using an adult seatbelt alone. Booster seats have come a long way since then, and there’s now a huge universe of portable booster car seats to keep kids safe while traveling light. It does offer a teensy bit more seating area than the original mifold as you can see below. However, that additional length moves the lap belt even further down the thighs and away from the proper position.

We have no problem getting a safe lap belt fit with hifold. Below you can see her more than a year ago testing out hifold. The lap belt is exactly where it should be. Once on board our flights, the hifold easily fit in luggage storage areas. If the plane had been full, I could have turned it sideways to take up less space or put it in front of our daughter’s seat. Thankfully the folded size is extremely compact, so even on a tiny regional flight it stows away. If possible, try to buy your car seat from a retailer with a fitting service and trained fitters. You may be able to phone up and make an appointment. The store should also be able to take the seat out to your car after you've bought it and fit it properly there. Our guide on how to fit a baby or child car seat has more details. i-Size is part of R129, a regulation for child car seats introduced in 2013. The idea behind i-Size is that all car seats with the i-Size logo will fit in all i-Size approved cars.

Advice & Inspiration

Your car and car seat must have Isofix, a system that attaches car seats directly to the frame of your car using connectors (either on an isofix base or on the seat itself). This mifold comfort (also available here) review covers the basics of mifold, who should use mifold, how to use mifold, how it fares in real world testing and hands-on comparisons of mifold versus competing folding booster seats. Hopefully this review will help you decide if mifold is the right choice for your family. What is the mifold travel booster seat? Unfortunately the lap belt fit you see in this picture is typically of what we often see with young kids using the mifold – remember that this joyful sprite is almost 7 and the product is marketed for kids 4+. The lap belt is extremely far forward on her thighs, clearly out of the recommended range that we saw in the IIHS diagram above. In a crash, her pelvis could move forward without engaging the lap belt as it should.

Like the mifold comfort, the hiccapop Uberboost ( full review here) wasn’t ideal for our petite kids but could work well for bigger carpool buddies who sometimes ride with us. It’s another inflatable booster seat but gives a little more space for broader kiddos than the Bubblebum. It’s hollow inside so you can probably roll it small than this, and at 1lb 3oz it’s 6oz lighter than the mifold comfort. However, my kid hated the optional shoulder belt clip and won’t use the seat until he’s tall enough to avoid it. hiccapop Uberboost vs mifold: folded size mifold vs Graco RightGuide If you’re riding in a car with adjustable head restraints, be sure to move it up so that your child has full support at least to the tops of the ears (but ideally to the top of the head). mifold review: seatbelt fit It's possible to buy seats that combine one or more groups, for example group 0+/1, 0-18kg, 40-105cm, or from birth to around four-and-a-half-years old. These are known as multi-group or combination seats. Group 1/harness seats (the Nomad, Urban Kanga, Nachfolger) - these use a harness to restrain the child and are suitable up to a maximum of 18kg or 105cm depending again whether the seat is approved to the height or weight based standard. Because of the harness, even height based harness seats have a max weight limit. They say up to age 4, but this is approximate. Some children will fit into them for longer and it's safe to keep using them if they are under the weight and height limit. Your little one sounds on the smaller side for their age, based purely on the height it looks like somewhere between 2nd and 9th centile, so this kind of seat might well last until more like 5 years old. Their weight may change this estimate. incredibly compact and portable — weighing less than a water bottle, it can fit in handbags and school bags;Lie-flat or carrycot car seats can be a good solution for newborns, especially premature babies or those with medical conditions, who need to be transported lying flat.
