Through his art, Joe Strummer played his part in shaping the musical landscape of the world and with it left an unrivaled and timeless legacy. The group Strummer dubbed the Mescaleros began as a band in name only, but then rapidly evolved into the real deal, only to be stopped in their tracks in the worst way, just as things had started to fly. The previously unreleased track stands as one of Strummer’s final recordings, with vocals recorded in December 2002 at the famed Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire, Wales, mere weeks after Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros played their last ever live show at Liverpool University on 22 November 2002. Per Pitchfork, the collection also includes the song ‘Ocean Of Dreams’, which featured Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones. I'll agree that they are not true demos in most cases, but some tracks are so close to the finished tracks I don't see the point (except for a cash grab?

His full length debut on Daptone Records is equal parts raw feeling and elegance and exudes confidence and charm. Most of Global a Go-Go came from jams, a trait the Mescaleros chose not to refine over the course of the recording process. We started this work with 001, so to focus on Joe’s work with the Mescaleros was the natural second step on 002 because those songs he made with them just seemed to resonate so strongly and reinvigorated his connection with his audience at a level he hadn't experienced since his days with the Clash. Ahead of what would have been his 70th birthday (August 21), Dark Horse Records has announced a new box set of albums by Joe Strummer and his post- Clash band the Mescaleros. Recorded in 1996, it became B-side to the Mescaleros’debut single “Yalla Yalla” in 1999, but could easily be an Earthquake Weatherexile.

Now, 20 years to the day since his passing, musical figures including Strummer’s own musical contemporaries have reflected on his death and paid tribute to his lasting musical legacy. Joe Strummer 002serves asa loving tribute to Strummer’s final musical output, released in celebration of what would have been his70th birthday year. OK, the aforementioned lyric was scribed during his Clash period, but one thing that Joe most certainly never lost, was the ability to make succinct and at times truly eloquent observations, via the somewhat limited medium of verses and couplets in Rock’n’Roll songs. To be honest, it’s a bit of a sad listen, reading the liner notes and realising how soon he died after reigniting his productive years in making music.Joe Strummer 002: The Mescaleros Years highlights this intense period of creativity from 1999-2002, collecting for the first time such extraordinary albums as Rock Art and the X-Ray Style (1999), Global A Go-Go (2001), and the posthumous Streetcore (2003), along with Vibes Compass, a brand-new compilation of 15 B-sides and rarities, including early demos of some of the first tracks Joe wrote for the Mescaleros such as ‘The Road To Rock ‘N’ Roll’, ‘X-Ray Style’, ‘Techno D-Day’, as well as the previously unreleased ‘Secret Agent Man’ and the original recordings from Joe’s last ever sessions, including outtakes of ‘Get Down Moses’, ‘Coma Girl’ and the song ‘Fantastic’. For those who needed convincing, BMG/Ignition Records released Joe Strummer 001 in 2018, a double compilation that caught listeners up on the legendary punk singer’s post- Clash career. To mark the box set announcement, the label has put out the previously unreleased song ‘The Road To Rock ‘N’ Roll’. The desert-scorched “Time and the Tide” and the cavernous “Ocean of Dreams” would have been a welcome addition to Rock Art, indicating that Strummer probably had plenty of backup ideas in his back pocket at any time.
