Description

Following sustained archaeological criticism, the ley hunter community dissipated in the 1990s, with several of its key proponents abandoning the idea and moving into the study of landscape archaeology and folkloristics. Bel Jacobs explores the history and meaning of ley lines, and talks to the artist they have inspired.

We visited, amongst other places the site of Uffington horse, Uffington castle (iron age hill fort), the modified dragon hill and the wonderful natural amphitheatre in which this is situated.

In 1983, Ley Lines in Question, a book written by the archaeologists Tom Williamson and Liz Bellamy, was published. Reminds me of the York ghost sighting of a troop of Roman soldiers seen passing through a pub cellar but only from the waist up - the original Roman road was 3 feet below. Ley lines ( / l eɪ/) are straight alignments drawn between various historic structures, prehistoric sites and prominent landmarks. It is quite clear from Stonehenge and other ancient works that a lot of careful siting went on in the past.

It is a theory that has long held interest for tan jones: "I've been interested in ley lines for years," they say. Thus by associating the shape with the position of temples, the sites – and the people who entered them – would be imbued and blessed with this etheric energy. The tour was so informative, connecting history with interesting spiritual facts, I’d walked past so many places on the tour and never realised the meaning that they had. I feel like a lot is missing and while reading the book I couldn't find anything with gravitas in the book. In this book, Michell promoted the ancient astronaut belief that extraterrestrials had assisted humanity during prehistory, when humans had worshipped these entities as gods, but that the aliens left when humanity became too materialistic and technology-focused.But in many ways, for the artist, the journey is ongoing, still sending out its tendrils between myth and history, past and present, the human and the more-than-human. By extending the St Pauls line he found it landed on a burial mound and had lots of manor houses along it. I grew up in the countryside, connected to Earth energy, so it makes complete sense to me that there are energy lines moving through the Earth.
