Description

This book addresses many feelings and questions children may have related to such controversial themes. The illustrations were very detailed and used warm toned colours which was quite effective in making me feel comforted whilst reading it.

The illustrations and rhymes are lighthearted and make the book feel very accessible for adults and children. This book is written as a poem and tells the story of a little boy whos parents are getting divorced. It shows the boy's discovery that sometimes family dynamics change, and although that can be worrying, his parents' love for him will not change. If children are struggling with this in their own lives this could be used to read with them or suggest a parent read it with their child. This book would be a good one to use if a child in your class was experiencing family issues in relation to their parents splitting up as it explains how to view the situation more positively instead of feeing down about it.This is the kind of book that should have a place in every class, as a teacher will not always know when a child is needing the kind of emotional reassurance it gives. Essentially, the little boy, who is trying to use an inanimate tool, to fix a very real, tangible problem, comes to find that some things in life you cannot fix. A powerful poem which follows a boy who’s parents are getting divorced and feels like he is to blame and struggling to come to terms with it. This can be used as a conversation started with those children in your class that are going through this tough situation.

The illustrations highlight how, to them, it can feel like their whole world is breaking and changing which gives the adult reader a perspective on how the process can feel very overwhelming for the child/children involved. It offers a slightly different approach, but the core theme is exactly as you'd expect, and rightly so. The cracks on the page that follow the boy throughout the book reinforce the fact he feels his whole world is now broken and then when he realises everything might just be okay, those cracks disappear. This is a good book to share with children who are in this positions to assure them that families can live apart and it will be okay. In the second half of the book, where the main character realizes that it is ok and that hearts cannot be put back together with glue the images are no longer broken.

The love a parent has for a child is unconditional; Complete and absolute, and not dependent on any terms or conditions. I think this book can help bring comfort to children going through this and lets students who haven't gone through this to sympathize with their classmates more. Reinforces the view that the child is not to blame and will continued to be loved as before, and sometimes it is not possible to 'fix' a problem.

It is about a little boy who is trying to cope with his parent separating but because his world is torn apart, its hard for him to do. This book will be a great book to have in my classroom to assist children when coming to terms with their parents splitting up! If you are concerned about the health and wellbeing of yourself or children in your care, you should always consult an appropriate healthcare professional. I also /loved/ the artistic concept that all the things around the child on each page were broken too. This book was a very risky topic for Gray to cover, and manifest in an early years foundation frame of mind.
