About this deal

Overall this is a nice paced story with beautifully vibrant illustrations that can be enjoyed by teachers, parents and children alike. Howlingly funny, its luridly elegant illustrations will be in frequent demand; ideal for parents and grandparents to read aloud. For their first exhibition they asked 18 artists to each design a rug for the Design Museum in London.

Haughton's retro illustrations capture George's inner turmoil in both the position of his ears and the subtle shift of his eyeballs. The individual's struggle for self-control is subtly conveyed in George's story, which manages to make old concept fresh thanks to George's winning personality and a vibrant, jazzy artistic style. In 2007, he was named one of Time magazine's Design 100 for his work for Fair Trade and People Tree. This depicts the items importance and also illustrates its appeal helping the reader to slightly empathise with George. Have read this over and over and kids feel drawn into George's naughtiness, his having to say sorry, and then .To find out, read (and giggle) along with the story below - it's online and interactive, with lots of questions and prompts for chat with your little ones. My only critique would be that I wish George talked a bit more in the last half of the book, since I enjoy doing a George voice. the bright primary colors help to convey a sense of excitement and focus, as non-essential details are often white with only a small outline. My favorite is the ending of George next to a trashcan, leaving the decision up to the reader of what George will do next. George is faced with situtations which are tempting with his conscience reminding him that it would be bad to go through with it.

Haughton's digitally rendered illustrations have a modern-retro feel, and creative kids will enjoy seeing that the conventional color rules are missing; George is a fuchsia, red, and mulberry delight, while Harry is olive-green with navy blue and aqua hair. This brilliant, bold and instantly recognisable picture book is all about George, a lovely pet dog who promises to be good when his owner is out. However, as it is quite charming in its humor it would could also be enjoyed by those older with lower reading capabilities. The high contrast illustrations make it good for very young children, while toddlers will enjoy the story and saying whether they think George will be naughty or good. The text is simple, predictable and repetitive to help emergent readers follow the plot and make predictions as they read. Chris Haughton’s fetchingly funny story and vibrant, retro illustrations are sure to lure dog lovers of all ages — and anyone who has ever met a temptation too good to resist.
