Description

After eighteen years, I was finally free! I was a grown-up, goddamn it! And I was confident my chutzpah and tenacity would get me through anything. Eighteen-year-olds are stupid that way. If Karen heard her parents fighting or felt the stress from their divorce she grabbed her books and her blanket and crawled under the stairway to read for hours. Reading was her lifeline. Loved hearing about her favorite childhood books. I watched her cycle through emotionally unavailable single fathers with mustaches and Volvos. They all promised her the world and charmed the crap out of her by being nice to her weird kids: Asher, Leah, and the angelic youngest … me. But eventually all those dads realized we were a hot-mess family of hyperactive neediness that presented itself as a bottomless abyss full of red wine (Mom) and daddy issues (us) (and maybe Mom, but let’s not go there). Like the podcast, the book offers funny, feminist advice for survival—both in the sense of not getting killed and just, like, getting a job and working through your personal shit so you can pay your bills and have friends.” — Rolling Stone

Each chapter of Stay Sexy & Don't Get Murdered, is split between Hardstark and Kilgariff telling their own experiences. My Favorite Murder] empowers listeners by offering practical advice for survival and self-care and by using comedy to deflate the scariness of these topics.” — TheAtlantic.com But amongst all the tears and emotion, there’s so much humour, as to be expected from these two! Karen’s guide on how to be a latchkey kid is hilarious, as is her analogy that being an alcoholic is like shitting in a hot tub ie killing the buzz of everyone around you! LOL. And there were quite a few Stephen King references as well, which I particularly enjoyed... I feel like the story of how Georgia got into true crime is something that a lot of us murderinos can relate to. In Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered, Karen and Georgia focus on the importance of self-advocating and valuing personal safety over being ‘nice’ or ‘helpful.’ They delve into their own pasts, true crime stories, and beyond to discuss meaningful cultural and societal issues with fierce empathy and unapologetic frankness. I related to some of ‘those’ crazy years myself. Although I never was into the ‘party-till-you-drop’ and ‘tequila sunrise’ bar days. I enjoyed these women... and their life stories about being young- scared - insecure with themselves - confused- depressed - and dealings with anxiety.

It’s not that I needed the advice given from this book ( I’m an old fart).... but I grew up in the 70s- like Karen did. Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered: The Definitive How-to Guide is a nonfiction book written by Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff, host of the true crime comedy podcast My Favorite Murder. The book is a dual memoir of Hardstark and Kilgariff and also discusses true crime. It was released on May 28, 2019. [1] [2] There is an audiobook available with Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff as the narrators, also with the help of Paul Giamatti. [3] Synopsis [ edit ] I love that this book is half stories about true crime and half just stories about their lives and the struggles of growing up with anxiety and depression and addiction and how being a 13 year old girl is the worst thing in the world it was all just so relatableI have a love/hate relationship with these girls. I love their podcast and normally enjoy listening to them, I love how casual the whole thing feels and I think they’re intelligent and hilarious.

Wildly popular…. In many ways, the subversive charm of [ My Favorite Murder] is today’s answer to riot grrrl, the D.I.Y. feminist punk movement of the 1990s.” — The New York TimesA MUST READ FOR ALL - 5 “I really needed to hear that” stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered! Ha... lots more ‘words-of-wisdom’ from where that came from. Eye-rolling cringing stories of “are you kidding me?” I don’t usually listen to podcasts but I loved this book so much I’m actually considering listening to their podcast because I feel like I’m going to miss their sense of humor after I finish this book Kilgariff and Hardstark bring a much needed dimension to our current, true crime fever dream—an empathetic, slangy dose of acidic humor, weary compassion, and nervous hope. Their podcast is a joy to listen to and this book captures its energy and hilarity perfectly.” —Patton Oswalt, New York Times bestselling author of Silver Screen Fiend

Freaking hysterical, these ladies have a hilarious way of story telling and I was laughing out loud so many times listening it this audiobook The authors DID say they were facts obsessed so if anything was wrong to please let them know... first chapter there is a comment "that's the price to pay in LA with 365 days of sunshine" LA gets 284 sunny days on average (a local beer company named a beer after this date so LA doesn't forget) but c'mon any reasonable person knows there is no place that has sun 365 days a year and YES I get she was "just making a point" but if you're super into facts... bleh In addition to being laugh-out-loud funny, smart, and incisive, Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered is so interesting and insightful that it made me a) want to be best friends with the authors and b) for real ask them to take me on as a therapy patient. This book is hilarious, honest, insightful, and clever as hell. Do yourself a fun favor by buying it and consuming it. You’ll emerge at the final word as a new-and-improved badass version of your former self.” —Megan Mullally, New York Times bestselling co-author of The Greatest Love Story Ever Told Love that they are always saying they aren’t the experts, and you’re only the expert in your own experiences so their advice won’t woe for everyone Their lunatic - crazy- years offers a ‘warning contribution’..... to young women. Personally - I think young adult women - ( daughters in college years), could benefit from this book: the Audiobook being the perfect vehicle.

My first reaction was "This is another shitty memoir written by some 'popular' blogger who has dipped into narcissism and thinks she has "advice" for the rest of us (or s/he assumes we want to hear every last word about her life and childhood). I’d been dreaming of being done with public education and escaping all its bullshit rules since I got detention for yawning too loud when I was in kindergarten, so the dream of college was one I was happy to have neither the academic nor the financial resources to obtain. Instead I moved forty-five minutes away to the sprawling, gritty, insane world that is Los Angeles.
