If you have a VR-ready PC and want to use Oculus Link with a stable wired connection, you’ll need the right type of cable. Sadly a majority of your time will be spent falling in battle. Each time you die provides you with new insight and upgrades. Ranging from maximum health to damage buffs, these upgrades can turn the tides of battle in your favor. Akin to playing one last round in the Civilization series, each successful run makes it difficult to put the game down.

But the Pico 4 pulls ahead in pretty much every other regard. It offers 8GB RAM, a display that’s 2,160 x 2,160 pixels per eye, and uses a 5300mAh battery; by comparison, the Oculus Quest 2 only has 6GB RAM, 1832 × 1920 pixels per eye, and a 3,640 mAh battery. While Skyrim is available on all manner of platforms, VR is arguably one of the newer and more interesting ways to experience the stellar open-world game. It also mixes up the playstyle of the game, with ‘realistic’ controls letting you slash away at draugrs and dragons by actually swinging your arm. And even with dated graphics by 2021 standards, there are still moments where Skyrim's art style and lighting present you with some beautiful vistas; perfect escapism from the rigors of real life. There is also mod support through the Steam Workshop, which adds yet another arrow into Skyrim's brimming quiver.The big benefit of the Rift S is its store. It uses the PC-based Oculus Store, which has had a few years to build up an impressive library of games and apps. There are lots of compelling experiences to try here, including a more feature-complete and potentially moddable version of Beat Saber. If the Oculus Store isn't enough, you can also browse SteamVR for even more games (though be prepared to wrestle with settings to get the two platforms to work with each other). However, with Oculus Link, all of those options are available on the Quest 2, as well.

With that in mind, even before looking at the differences between the headsets, we recommend the Quest 2 over the Rift S, because that's what Oculus will be developing from now on. In terms of CPU and storage options, both headsets are identical – using the same Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 chip and coming in either 128GB or 256GB options. All VR headsets have a fairly similar design; a display covers your eyes and is attached to your head via straps. We’ve tested a fair few of their Quest-specific covers, straps and facial interface replacements in the past. Some staff members love the added comfort, while others don’t feel they made a huge difference. A novice player might turn on a bonus multiplier helper, while a sadis — I mean expert ups the challenge by limiting their game to a single mistake before failure. Recently, Beat Saber added a multiplayer update so you can compete head-to-head against friends to see who the most skillful swordsman is within your friend group. Oculus is phasing out the Rift S and focusing entirely on the Quest platform going forward. You can still buy a Rift S, but you'll be unable to do so sometime next year. Oculus is putting all of its energy toward standalone VR headsets that, thanks to the Oculus Link cable, can also function like PC-tethered headsets for PC-based VR games.

The Oculus Rift S improves on the previous Rift headset with a sharper screen and a camera array that doesn't require external sensors. You’ll sneak, shoot and scavenge your way through a zombie-filled New Orleans with every major choice you make resulting in equally hefty consequences. We’ve tried some lens protectors, like this one from Orzero, and found they work well on Quest 2 (and other headsets — the shape is pretty generic) to protect them from sunlight and dust. The controllers merely rest in these slots as there’s no mechanism to charge them. What Anker does give you though, is rechargeable cells in the box. You can use these with the controller and manually charge them if they run out of juice. Oculus VR has designed the Oculus Rift to be relatively simple to get up and running starting with connecting the headset to your PC and plugging it in. Since the Rift is already tethered to the control box with a 13-foot cable, your computer should automatically detect the Rift and install all drivers and accompanying software.Even though it’s now past its 10-year anniversary, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is still very much a game you should try in virtual reality. You’ll need to connect the Meta Quest 2 to a gaming PC or laptop, albeit not a hugely powerful one given the game’s age. And it’s not superbly optimized for cutting-edge VR use. However, Skyrim VR basically lets you step into a virtual country with a fantasy and Nordic flavor.
