As we had to replace most of the floor area that the tray would be sitting on, this gave us the opportunity to ensure that the floor would be totally flat and level for the tray to sit on. If you’re happy with the general fitment, you then need to establish the best possible route for your waste pipe if this isn’t already in place. Attach the waste to your tray then connect this to the trap. Step 3 - Level the Tray If you’re buying a shower tray to go with a shower enclosure you already have, the tray shape must match the shape of the enclosure. This is because the tray and enclosure, when joined together, must form a tight seal to ensure water can’t escape. If you’re replacing an old shower tray with a new one, and want the same size and shape, simply measure the old tray’s width and length, then buy a tray that matches. If it’s a quadrant shower tray, you’ll also need to measure the radius of the curve, which you can do as follows: Before you start, you need to make sure that the floor beneath the tray is capable of supporting it. It needs to be completely firm, with no flexibility as this can cause problems. Mark out where the tray is going to go and replace any floorboardsin this area with marine plywood that is at least 18mm. Step 2 - Cut Access Hatch

Repaired sections of wall retiled with ceramic tiles Position tray in place and mark access hatch and waste PVC and chrome shower trays are raised shower trays. The tray is made from PVC, while the legs are made from chrome. PVC is a tough and durable material that’s easy to clean and has an incredibly long lifespan. The compression joint screw cap was then tightened pinch tight to secure the waste pipe in place. Advice on plastic compression wastes and how they go together can be seen in our project here. Installing shower tray on tiled floor: We recommend that the shower tray installation is completed before fitting tiles. Fit the tray first and seal the gap between the tray and floor/walls with silicone. Then lay the tiles up to the shower tray and seal this gap with silicone too. This method will provide the best watertight seal.

If you're buying a shower tray to go with an existing shower enclosure, the two parts must be the same size and shape. This is so they can form a watertight seal when they are joined together. To find out how to fit both a raised or flat shower tray read on below. Should I install a raised or flat shower tray? Based in the West Midlands, we are an independent plumbers merchant and national distributor of quality Plumbing, Bathroom, Heating and Plastic products. Use your sealant gun to force the sealant into the joint so that it’s fully filled and then dampen your finger and run it over the surface to both smooth it off and force it fully into the gap.

What Are Shower Trays Made Of?

When connecting into your main drainage point, in most cases it will be a 110mm plastic/PVC soil pipe as we are here. This is a fairly easy job as you can use a strap on boss. Once the tray has set and is fully secured, the waste can now be connected up. In this case we were using the existing waste so we pushed the end of the waste pipe up under the floor (with the screw cap, washer and tapered rubber seal in place) and using a torch, located it within the connection on the tray’s waste trap. Once the shower tray has been fixed in position, connect up the trap and waste following the manufacturer’s details. Tiling and Sealing Around the Shower Tray As I’m sure you can imagine, digging up a solid concrete floor to trace an existing shower waste pipe to a main drain, moving that pipe to a new position or running a new pipe and then covering it over is a fair amount of work. An essential for any shower enclosure installation, shower trays provide a waterproof platform for you to stand on comfortably while showering. Our truly comprehensive collection boasts over 200 shower tray options to ensure you find a tray that perfectly suits your space no matter how distinctive your tastes. A bathroom’s size and layout will often dictate the type of shower tray and shower tray sizes that can be installed. For example, space-saving square and quadrant-shaped shower trays best suit small bathrooms and ensuites. But larger bathrooms can accommodate more spacious rectangular and offset quadrant shower trays. Also, consider if there’s enough space in the bathroom for the type of enclosure door you want. For example, a hinged door needs space to open, while a sliding door doesn’t. With the tiles removed the wall was also inspected closely. Again, long term moisture ingress had caused considerable damage so we also pulled a section of wall away and replaced it.

If the pipes and waste are below the floor, you can choose any height of shower tray. However, the most popular choice is a low-profile or flat, flush-fitting shower tray. Both trays sit flush to the floor, but the flat tray has no lip around the edge, while the low-profile tray has a small outer lip. Both allow easy access to the shower and create a minimalist, contemporary look. Installing or fitting a shower tray is very much dependent on the type of tray you are installing and the surface it’s being installed on. It is highly important to fix the tray to the floor firmly and prevent any movement. If any movement occurs, even very slight, over time, not only will any sealing around the tray fail but it will also loosen the waste and cause leaks. Tighten it so that it is “pinch” tight e.g. tighten it as much as you can by hand and then one final turn to pinch it up and seal it. You don’t need to over tighten it!

Acrylic shower traysare popular when choosing a shower. They are durable, water-resistant, and extra safe with their natural non-slip resistance. They are also very lightweight which is ideal when upgrading a bathroom as most flooring can withstand it. These shower trays are great for those looking for little maintenance and a clean finish. Shower trays are available in a variety of materials, which all have different qualities as follows: To tidy things up, attach your shower tray side panelsto the tray to create a flush look. These should be really easy to attach, just pay attention to any instructions you get with the product. Step 6 - Seal It! All trays have a flat underside making installation and leveling even easier Slimline: At just 40-45mm high stone resin trays are amongst the sleekest on the market The shower tray waste trap was then fixed in place on the tray. This was just a simple matter of unscrewing the top section, positioning the main cup section and seal under the tray and then screwing the top section and seal down.

Before placing the tray down in place, we first replaced the sections of flooring that had been removed that would sit under the shower tray. At the end of the tray we also created a trap door. This was simply a section of flooring that could be easily unscrewed and removed so that we could access the waste. In answer to whether you should install a raised or flat shower tray, it depends on a few things – the type of floor you are installing on to, location of the existing waste if there is one and how much space there is available for the tray waste. Ensuring the waste in the floor and tray lines up: ideally, buy a shower tray with a drainage hole that lines up with the position of the waste pipe on the floor. But, bear in mind that if a different tray is used or the shower enclosure is being moved to a new position, the waste pipe and plumbing will need to be adjusted before the shower tray fitting. In our example here we have had to remove a chunk of the floor as it was rotten so this has given us a good heads up on how the existing waste runs.
