The Damned: Live Performances - 1989". Whiterabbitskgs.co.uk. 20 January 2018 . Retrieved 1 November 2022. Colegrave, Stephen and Chris Sullivan (2001). Punk: The Definitive Record of a Revolution. Thunder's Mouth Press. p.103. ISBN 9781560257691. For Darkadelic, the Damned teamed up with producer Thomas Mitchener, formerly of the bands Haunts and Spycatcher, because he was, as guitarist Captain Sensible put it, a "purveyor of the '70s sound" they were going for on the album. [13] Singer Dave Vanian stated that, for him, "the only criteria was to have this album driven by more pronounced guitars." [9] Garage band they may be, but they are one of the best in that case. Western Promise for example, echoes the darker love songs that The Damned dip into; it’s a delicious song, with some lovely brass and keyboard work adding to the overall atmosphere. Leschka, T. (27 November 2020). "Shifting From Punk To Goth: The Damned's Phantasmagoria". Furiomagazine.com . Retrieved 5 July 2023.

This album is further proof that the band are about the music as opposed to the novelty. There poses the question that myself and friends get at Damned shows which is ‘surely you’re far too young to like The Damned?’. However, their music resonates with audiences of all ages and genders and this continues fluently throughout this new release. The Damned could easily be forgiven for just coasting and living off their success from the ‘70s and ‘80s after 12 albums. Instead, Darkadelic sounds like a band that’s almost as vital now as when they put out Damned Damned Damned in 1977. It’s another solid release from an absolutely legendary punk outfit.Morrison and Vanian married and had a daughter, Emily, born on 9 February 2004. Around this time, Morrison 'retired' from performing with the band, though she remained involved with the Damned as the band's manager. Her replacement on bass was Stu West. [ citation needed]

From the beginnings of the band, Vanian had adopted a vampire-like appearance onstage, with chalk-white makeup and formal dress. [48] With Sensible gone, Vanian's image became more characteristic of the band as a whole. The Damned signed a recording contract with major label MCA Records, and the Phantasmagoria album followed in July 1985, preceded by the UK No.21 single " Grimly Fiendish". Other hits from the same album were " The Shadow of Love" [49] with its gloomy gothic sound, and the lighter " Is It A Dream?". [50]Plans had been in progress to reunite the original band for about fifteen years,” says Vanian. ”It’s taken a long time to put various bits and bobs together to make it happen. It seemed never-ending, certainly over the last ten years. It was now or never in some respects.” The Damned’s 12th studio album, and first in five years, was “pretty much finished” before the 2022 reunion tour of the original quartet, who were the first U.K. punk band to release a single (“New Rose” in October 1976) and to tour the U.S. Darkadelic reflects the band’s continuing musical evolution; its usual gothic-flavored drama is intact, but filled with intricate instrumental dynamics and textures — particularly on “Western Promise,” a song with soundscapes that are accented by trumpets and sonic nods to ’80s new romantic fare.

"New Rose – The Damned | Listen, Appearances, Song Review". AllMusic . Retrieved 17 April 2014. Recorded in Acton and close to where Sensible spent a drunken night with Sid Vicious that ended up in the cells, there’s a new maturity in DARKADELIC with more gothic tendencies than punk. Musically evoking two Damned albums, 1982’s Strawberries and 1985’s Phantasmagoria, DARKADELIC will please fans. Executed with emphasis on guitar work and technicality as opposed to image, the intricacy of this album conflicts against their earlier expectations and highlights their musicianship all these years later. On 25 October 2019, Pinch announced that he would be departing the band after 20 years. His last gig was The Damned's show at the London Palladium on 27 October 2019. Paste: What phases did you go through at home when the pandemic hit? Did you immediately decide to write an entire new album? Some good people turned up,” Captain explains. “But, crucially for him, he was the only one that was wearing a cravat.”
