Redemption by David Baldacci - Pan Macmillan Redemption by David Baldacci - Pan Macmillan

Jane Harper, New York Times bestselling author of The Dry David Baldacci is one of the all-time best thriller authors I loved most of this book as the mystery unfolded and connections were uncovered, but I wasn’t ultimately enamoured of the direction it took, as it seemed a tad unrealistic (and left-fieldish). Lin, a convict, escapes Australian imprisonment and flees to India, where he hopes to disappear. Surrounded by the unknown, he sets up a clinic in the slums, hoping to find a place where he can belong. Thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis witnesses her older sister, Cecilia, flirting with the housekeeper’s son, Robbie. But the innocence of youth, combined with her concern for her sister, leads to a crime that will forever change their lives. I was reminded that we also didn’t see much of her in the second book of the series, The Last Mile, as I felt it was one that book’s weaknesses. I wonder if it’s because there’s a subtle (well, ish) sexual tension there and Baldacci’s wanting to drag that out.

From guilt and forgiveness to healing and change, many people desire to be redeemed from the mistakes and injustices they’ve committed. But seeking forgiveness is a difficult journey and often takes time. Crime & Thrillers ‘You’re going to be an apprentice for life’: David Baldacci shares his advice for aspiring writers 24/09/2020
