This book offers a unique insight into the world of children, and especially the way in which young souls – who have a right to be ‘childish’– can be irreparably damaged by the experience of boarding school. The book is thoroughly researched, and provides fascinating perspectives on the inner landscape of childhood, largely by showing the deep connections between the emotional, sexual and spiritual development of children. By exploring how boarding can damage these connections, the author makes a unique contribution to our understanding of childhood and adolescence.”–The International Journal of Children’s Spirituality.

Sorry to say but this article appears to be unbalanced and one sided. I taught in a Prep-School for 5 years and while not the same as a boarding school find it unimaginable to think that the excellent ethos of my school could change so fundamentally from one age group to the other as the children move on to boarding school at the age of 13. That parents at my school, who always took such an active interest by participating in their children’s education, should just shed their concern and responsibility whilst still paying thousands of pounds a year after their child has reached the age of thirteen beggars belief! Obviously there will always be some exceptions and I’m saddened to know Alexis Martin’s experience was less than happy. MW So instead of showing off the big bugs, the opening scene follows a little girl as she wanders through the New Mexican desert, listlessly clutching her favorite doll. That stunning performance was delivered by child actress Sandy Descher. Later, in one of the most effective title drop scenes ever orchestrated, a vial of formic acid is held under her character’s nose. Suddenly recognizing the aroma, the traumatized youngster screams “Them! Them!” Descher never found out what sort of liquid was really sloshing around in that container. A magnificent achievement, I will recommend it a lot”–Mark Dunn, Consultant Psychotherapist at Guy’s Hospital, London. Having pioneered therapeutic work with ex-boarders since the late 80’s, in 2006 we joined forces with Professor Joy Schaverien to run the first ever specialist training in this subject. Then, to coincide with the launch of our Routledge guide to therapeutic work with ex-boarders, Trauma, Abandonment and Privilege,( read Sue Gerhardt’s review) in 2016 we offered a Diploma Training with CPD option at post-graduate level, ‘ The Un-Making of Them‘. In response to popular demand, we ran this training again in 2017-18 and 2021-22; the fourth intake starts in May 2023 in London. It would be unfair to call this depressing contribution to the culture of victimhood worthless, for the authors present their personal views on the harm done to children by the boarding school system cogently and one cannot deny that for at least a small minority they make important and valid points. I feel sure however that their views are extremely unrepresentative and biased, and fear that despite their good intentions this book is doing a great deal of harm.

At the dawn of the 21st century British society is still shaped by a private education system devised to gentrify the Victorian middle classes and produce gentlemen to run the Empire. Yet it is not on the political agenda. It is rarely the subject of public debate, and we remain blind to its psychological implications. a b c "Them! U.S.A., 1954". Monthly Film Bulletin. Vol.21, no.240. British Film Institute. 1954. p.131. The big insect mainly appears in long shots, and for close-ups, Smith built the front three quarters of a second large-scale ant and mounted it onto a camera crane. During scenes that required swarms of ants, smaller, non-motorized models were used. Blowing wind machines moved the little units’ heads around in a lifelike manner. 3. Them! features the Wilhelm Scream. I don't think I ever formed a "survivor personality", and Duffell doesn't talk much about people who don't. Are we at least authentic? Or do we just struggle to live in the world?

On can wonder why it is that the British have an astonishing success in creating figures like Churchill,Kitchener, ’Bomber" Harris and Montgomery:no attachment to both sides, the prevalence of their own ego against enemies abroad or at home. Patriotism is merely a whip to line up the stupies when the “elite” wants to dine. Psychotherapy is about the making of meaning. It helps to give people a language for otherwise inexpressible feelings. This is never more important than with the boarding school graduate. This is because many who attended boarding schools, especially those who went to prep schools ...
