Antoine Fuqua's perpetually watchable Training Day was a major departure for star Denzel Washington who, along with co-star Ethan Hawke, Eisenberg wanted to avoid a flat, mono tone to the visuals so the audience could experience the “different feelings over the day,” building and releasing tension. One of the places where the restoration team got to play to the optimistic elements of the palate was a scene early in the film where Alonzo and Jake get in the car together for the first time.

Washington won an Oscar for his performance. While he’s better in films like Malcolm X and Philadelphia , he makes for one hell of a movie villain. The actor’s atypical mannerisms — the flashy smile, the piercing eyes, the smooth delivery — are on display, albeit turned up a notch and twisted in a manner that makes him both magnetic and terrifying. He’s nothing short of amazing here. I speak from experience when I say decisions like the 100 years banner happen in a boardroom and not an art department. When accepting his Oscar for The Fighter, Christian Bale complimented his co-star Mark Wahlberg. Bale reasoned that his grandiose turn only worked because Wahlberg offered the relatively more calm and collected antidote, sparing the audience from an endless onslaught of scene-chewing. "Training Day" is a blistering action drama that asks the audience to decide what is necessary, what is heroic and what crosses the line in the harrowing gray zone of fighting urban crime. Does law-abiding law enforcement come at the expense of justice and public safety? If so, do we demand safe streets at any cost? Training Day won an Oscar for Best Actor (Denzel Washington) and was nominated for Best Supporting Actor (Ethan Hawke). The film was directed by Antoine Fuqua based on the book by David Ayer. TD is one of those films that's on TV a lot, and whenever I come across it when channel-surfing, I'll usually stop right there and watch it right to the end. Training Day's ensemble is arrestingly eclectic, mixing trendsetting musicianswith an assortment of talented character actors. Scott Glenn (Silence of the Lambs) plays a criminal who finds himself on the wrong end of Alonzo's brand of justice. Tom Berenger (Platoon) plays a high-ranking official with the rare ability to intimidate the relentless Alonzo. One of the great things about HDR is that we get what I like to refer to as translucent low lights. In scenes like that, you can see right into them, so you don’t feel like you’re missing anything and don’t feel like anything is crushed.”

Fuqua makes a strong partnership with David Ayer who revels in the complex moral dynamic between Alonzo and Jake. "I walk a higher path son," Alonzo intones when Jake doubts that his so-called training day isn't going as he imagined. The movie smoothly assimilates strong dialogue and violent set-pieces while avoiding a stop-start momentum. The same could be said of Training Day. While it's highly entertaining watching Denzel Washington atypically playing a murderous and diabolical sociopath, the movie would feel lopsided without Ethan Hawke's performance. In his role as the unsuspecting Jake Hoyt, the cop who is nominally drawn into his inaugural 'training day' on the streets, Hawke is our audience surrogate. While here, he has to work the streets for a year or so before earning his promotion. Hoyt gets the opportunity to work under Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington) where they spend the day getting to know one another and patrol some of L.A.’s toughest neighborhoods. Alonzo has streets smarts and prefers a different kind of law – he lets criminals go after he’s scared them and so forth. As the day progresses, Hoyt witnesses a different kind of policework and it’s not one that he’s too fond of. Is Alonzo the force’s saving grace or just a corrupt cop?
