To celebrate its return this month, the banana flavoured rum is proving once more that you don’t need to make the 10,000-mile round-trip to Jamaica to enjoy the spirit of the Caribbean, with Camusdarach beach in Scotland an unexpected setting for its tropical launch. On the nose: the rum is sweet and fruity, bold banana flavours (foam banana sweets, warm banana bread topped with brown sugar), lots of sweets flavours (chocolate limes, cola cubes, candy floss), subtle cinnamon and vanilla. The new rum combines natural ripe banana with toffee and offers tropical fruits and earthy notes on the nose. The gold medal on our bottle represents the gold medal the original recipe won at the Edinburgh international Exhibition in 1886.

Langs Mango and Ginger Rum is described as having notes of mango coulis, meringue and vanilla on the nose, while the palate brings mango, peach, lime and crystallised ginger. The rum is recommended served neat, over ice, or mixed with pineapple juice. Langs Banana Rum was first released in the late 1800s, and at some point between then and now it disappeared from shelves. This is not where the story ends, however, as that would be incredibly anti-climactic. So, in 2020, Langs Banana Rum returned! Built around a base of aged and unaged Jamaican rum, produced in pot and column stills, and infused with natural fruit flavours, this is an enjoyably bright and funky spirit. Banana rum is a light rum that benefits from the sweet tropical flavor of banana. I prefer Kenny Chesney’s brand, Blue Chair Bay, for my liquor cabinet because it also contains toasted coconut and spices for a well-rounded flavor that’ll send your taste buds right to the beach.
