Finish: dry and tangy, saltier a bit briny, for me it clings to the sides of my tongue which is a strange sensation that tequila thing never really lets go. After sampling several different malts, this won because it is complex, non-peated, and well balanced-- slightly sweet rather than too oaky or dry. I marked it at 72 and didn't really think it should have been released yet because it needed a couple more years in the cask. Pallet: sweet smooth arrival, sweet honey comes first then it’s floury (as in bread dough), there is a suggestion of floral (as in flowers) but then the tequila comes in as you swallow.

It’s not only that the expressions changed, the whisky itself is now using a combination of peated an unpeated spirit across the entire lineup. Vital stats: Single malt aged 10 years, primarily in American white oak bourbon barrels finished in Olorosso Sherry butts. While the four previous whiskies sought to cover points on the spectrum of delicate to heavy and peated to unpeated, “Jura 10 marries together the best of both” peated and unpeated malts, according an announcement of Jura 10 posted last month. For the first two years it struck me as one of the harshest whiskies of any type which I had encountered.

The bourbon casks are doing good job here imparting vanilla and fruitiness and the peat balanced it to a rounded expression. Part of the new core range of whiskies launched by Isle of Jura in early 2018, this 10 year old expression takes the place of Jura Origin. Like stated above, it’s a NAS offering (so probably lots of young spirit), and bottled at 40% and probably chill-filtered. Aroma is not intense at all, it's even dull, and adding water or ice doesn't really bring it back to life. It's that phantom of honey that encourages another sip, so it clearly does its job in encouraging more drinking!

It's perfectly drinkable - just unspectacular, lacking much depth and with a slightly grating orange zest roughness that makes you pucker slightly. I like that it stands alone, among other big island distilleries that get way more (in some cases) deserving press. It's a truly sophisticated and connoisseurial review to match a truly sophisticated and connoisseurial whisky. Obviously I was curious to see how did all those changes impacted the whiskies and taste them so let’s start with the entry level offering – Jura Journey.
