About this deal

It says in the blurb "From the moment he (Anthony Verey) arrives at the Mas Lunel, a frightening and unstoppable series of consequences is set in motion. Tremain, thankfully, manages to sustain the suspense until the very last page, and even after we find out who the "bad guy" is and what he or she’s done, we don’t know if he or she will get away with it. Aramon Lunel is an alcoholic (he has an over-fondness for pastis, “the” drink of the South of France), who is in poor health. If you can barely wait the 20 minutes it takes for the next James Patterson to appear that's okay with me.

Among her best are: seventeenth century England in Restoration and the Danish court in Music and Silence, the New Zealand gold rush of the mid 19th century in The Color and contemporary immigrant life on England in The Road Home.In this book, Tremain described the story of an aged butler, who lives a lonely life in the house that his former employers left him.

A garden designer enjoying a late-flourishing love affair with Kitty, a mediocre watercolourist in southern France, Veronica has admitted few passions into her life aside from Susan, the horse which mitigated the miseries of her childhood, but Anthony is one of them; and when he decides that what will transform his old age is a splendid house in the Cévennes, Veronica throws herself into making his sketchy dreams a reality. Both of the families are composed of a brother and a sister, and through their intertwined stories Tremain analyses complicated relationships with their mothers and fathers, childhood traumas and their effect on the current lives of the characters. In 2009, she donated the short story The Jester of Astapovo to Oxfam's " Ox-Tales" project, four collections of UK stories written by 38 authors. Her brother, at the very least her half-brother that is, molested her too, all after her saintly mama dies. I don’t think it can hold a candle to the magnificent “Music and Silence,” which I read years ago and still think about often, but other than the above grammatical quibble, I really can’t point to any particular fault, though something holds it back from greatness.

When Anthony’s business declines, he visits Veronica in France, where he attempts to purchase the Lunel home. The book reminded me a little of the works of Thomas Hardy – characters at the mercy of fate, people who were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, and strangely, Trespass, which was longlisted for 2010’s Man Booker Prize, reminds me a little of an earlier Man Booker winner, John Banville’s The Sea, though the setting and subject matter are entirely different. Its owner is Aramon Lunel, an alcoholic so haunted by his violent past that he's become incapable of all meaningful action, letting his hunting dogs starve and his land go to ruin. The scene-setting opening is languorous and beautiful, giving full rein to Tremain's descriptive gifts. Excellent atmospheric gothic with an undertone of real melancholy about blighted childhoods and the way they can haunt into adulthood. Anthony Verey feels wearyingly sorry for himself for most of the book and not only did I not like his character, I found his perpetual whinging spoilt the rest of this story for me as well.

Have to leave this book unfinished, not happy about it because I was sure I would like it seeing that it takes place here in France and the author is quite reputable, but no, it is soooooo depressing, the characters are unsympathetic and I don't like the way the plot is going, it is bleak and gloomy and I can't find any redeeming qualities. The characters are fabulously vivid, I can picture exactly how they look, what they wear, how they move, their little behaviours and idiosyncrasies. Instead the novel is split between the Lunels and a rich English brother and sister, Veronica and Anthony Verey, one of whom is already living in France and the other who decides to emigrate nearby - possibly to Mas Lunel. Aware that the sibling bond between Anthony and Veronica long predates her own involvement in her lover's life, Kitty asks herself: "Doesn't every love need to create for itself its own protected space? We honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' continuous connection to Country, waters, skies and communities. Meanwhile, his sister Audrun, alone in her modern bungalow within sight of the Mas Lunel, dreams of exacting retribution for the unspoken betrayals that have blighted her life.
